Tell us about yourself and what you do?
The Lost High Rollers are Dave Harmonson on Guitar and Pedal Steel, Ethan Lawton on Mandolin, Greg Nies on Drums, and Mike McDermott on the Bass along with myself, Zoe Muth writing and singing the songs. We play music inspired by vintage country, country blues, and singer/songwriter folksy stuff. I write songs mostly about heartbreak and having crappy jobs but I'm trying to branch out a bit. We all quit our various day jobs in 2011 to tour in support of our newest record Starlight Hotel. So far we can still pay our rent.
How did you get together and start out?
I was playing open mics around Seattle in 2006/2007 and seemed to be getting a pretty good response. Ethan and I had some friends in common from playing bluegrass and country jam circles around town and I met Dave at a local country bar called the Little Red Hen where he had a weekly gig. They were kind enough or believed in my music enough to start playing shows around town for next to nothing. Greg and Mike joined in 2009 and 2010 when we decided to start touring. We were lucky enough to get an opening spot for Eilen Jewell and her band when they came to Seattle and they told their label (Signature Sounds) and booking agent to sign us. The rest is history I guess, or may be someday.
What is your current release?
Our newest record is Starlight Hotel, which was released in April on Signature Sounds.
What is the best part of being in a band and singer/song writer?
Traveling all over the U.S. and soon the world and being my own boss.
What is your most significant moment yet?
This summer traveling to the East Coast, getting some big crowds in places we'd never been before made me realise that people actually like this stuff.
What are your biggest musical influences?
Bob Dylan and John Prine are the number one. Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams.
What venue/gig do you most want to play?
I would love to play Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, a huge free festival in San Francisco. Every year they have my favorite bands. I would also love to play Levon Helms' Midnight Ramble. Kinky Friedman's Presidential inauguration.
What is your favourite song you have written?
The Last Bus, a song from our 2009 self-titled record, not sure why, it's just one I really like to sing.
What’s your favourite album of this year?
Rod Picott's Welding Burns. The song "Rust Belt Fields" is really great.
What does the next six months have in store for you?
We'll be all over Western Europe in January and February starting with the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, Scotland, then back to the states for a Southwest and California tour. Just trying to finish up a new batch of songs for a 2013 record.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
I can't really imagine that far ahead. Hopefully writing better songs than I do now, maybe a nice little house and some land in the hills of Northern California.
What’s the best thing about Americana-UK?
That they expose unknown artists to people who may not hear about them otherwise.
Some might find it unusual for a girl born and bred in Seattle to end making country music but this is exactly the case with Zoe Muth and her Lost High Rollers. Recently out this year was ‘Starlight Hotel’ and not only a massive hit with A-UK’s very own Lynne Pettinger but also Bob Harris. Zoe and co. are now fully prepared to hit the UK hard in January with a tour top to bottom and Ireland so we thought we’d track her down for a ‘Dirty Dozen’.
