The Short Life of Gracie "The Short Life of Gracie"

The self titled EP from Bristol based The Short Life of Gracie opens with the mesmeric 'How to Kill Time', which sets the agenda of this alt. country four piece. The song, weighing in well over six minutes, has the canny knack of seeming to be only a couple of minutes long but delivering a whole cannon of ideas from droning slide guitar to resonant harmonies. So much so that one has to return to it several times to take in all the song’s aspects.

The EP continues in the same vein offering classic singer songwriter &Americana tinged rock arrangements reminiscent of Okkervill River but with added dark undertones. Nowhere is this better exemplified than in 'One Hundred Autumns' where background atmospherics lend a spookiness to the whole affair. The Short Life of Gracie inhabit an interesting artistic space where straight up warm Americana mingles with more subversive soundscapes without committing to either. The EP ends too soon and only an album will tell how the band will crystallise their sound.
