Ryan Purcell and The Last Round "Pick Me Up"

Independent, 2012

This bottle won't let you down.

  • Sometimes one yearns for the glory days of what used to be known as alt.country, when Son Volt were lookin’ at the world through a windshield and Wilco were still serenading casino queens. Before bands turned to navel-gazing introspection and chinstroking experimentation; Enter Ryan Purcell and his band....

  • This Washington State bunch are obviously no strangers to leaving their Cash, Band and Moon Mullican albums scattered willy-nilly on the trailer floor while they go out and get hammered, only to be skinned up on later that same evening. Opener ‘Cover Your Tracks’ is all briskly buzzing slide against a backdrop of brooding bass and whirring Hammond, ‘Get It Right’ is skintight funky barroom testifying, while ‘Draw A Line’ and ‘Hole In The Sky’ are rich country-gospel ballads. Elsewhere ‘Happy Hour’ and ‘Makes You Want To Cry’ find them cutting loose on some swinging honky-tonk, before they abandon all restraint on the semi-serious rock’n’roll of ‘Good Looking SOB’. Fans of The Bottle Rockets are gonna love this. And amazingly the only have 200-odd fans on their Facebook page. Get over there and get liking!
