Ryan Driver "Who's Breathing"

Fire Records 2011

Musical wallpaper.

  • Toronto native Ryan Driver has been releasing his laid back songs into the atmosphere for a number of years now. “Who’s Breathing” is his latest opus and it continues in much the same vein.

  • Driver is equally happy operating within the confines of genres from country soul (“Dead End Street”) to pseudo jazz (“It’s Tulip Season”), always maintaining a tasteful quality to his song-writing guaranteed not to offend.

The closest Driver gets to pushing the envelope is some atonal guitar work on the aforementioned, “It’s Tulip Season” and some background feedback on “Whether they Like it or Not”. Undoubtedly there are scores of people out there who will be impressed by Driver’s sense of decorum and the song-writing chops displayed on this album. However, to these ears, this sounds like music without any passion, urgency or feeling.

“Who’s Breathing” tastefully meanders by without ever finding a conclusion and as soon as its last note fades into oblivion not a single song can be recalled.
