Ken Will Morton "Contenders"

Ghostmeat, 2011

Spare the rod...

  • If you think there’s something fishy going on with Ken Will Morton, you could be right. Now on his sixth solo album, the Athens GA singer-songwriter got his big break when his song ‘Oh Lord’ featured heavily in the show the Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel.

  • A handsome devil with a pleasingly dustblown voice, Morton’s gentle songs of love and life, laced with fiddle, mandolin, Dobro and harp, find him swimming close to the territory of such Texas troubadours as Butch Hancock and Guy Clark. But there’s more than a pinch of Dylan, especially on the Latin-flavoured ‘Que Lastima’ and ‘Swan On The River’, which he admits is based on Bob’s ‘Ballad Of The Gliding Swan’. Morton’s not a mere copyist, however, and while his songs are rarely more than pleasant, they certainly carry his own identity.

Hopefully it won’t be too long before he’s netting the plaudits and scaling the heights.
