Craig Elkins "I Love You"
-
You know when you listen to the first line of an album and you KNOW you’re gonna love the whole thing? That. If the clear twangy first notes of Offin’ Myself weren’t enough of a hook, the line, “I’ve been thinking about offin’ myself” are enough to make you want to listen on, just to find out why.

Why, it turns out, is because the former Huffamoose singer has “been a real prick” and he’s pushed someone a little too hard. Oh, and when he was a young man he liked a drink. He returns to this theme later on in 'I Can’t Stop Being A Dick', his plaintive vocals soaring drunkenly above drums and guitars like Adam Sandler in The Wedding Singer. It sounds dire written down like this but Elkins’ lyrics are funny (“I’d be burned at the stake like some chubby Joan of Arc”), insightful and at the very least uncliched. There’s a (small) touch of Mark Everett about Elkins’ gravelly tenor voice and songwriting and if you like the grating honesty of Eels you’ll love this.
