Christina Martin ‘I Can Too’
-
This is an album of instant charm. An exquisite voice sits atop some great arrangements. It blasts off with a joyous ‘Hello’ which in turn leads to the Tom Pettyesque ‘Daisy’ – a great narrative with a driving rhythm that was made for the Ventura Highway. The musicians are from the top draw and a sense of accomplishment filters through the tracks.
There is also a feeling that this album lacks an adventurousness which Martin’s beautiful voice could easily handle.
‘Stole Something’ is a case in point where the crystal clear vocal leads the listener through the narrative with respectful backing highlighting the voice and cushioning the lyricism but it lacks a vital something to create the tension. I suspect that something is the need to move out of the comfort zone of the traditional songwriting form.
‘I Can Too’ is a perfectly fine album of songs that plough a very familiar ( and well loved) furrow. Christina Martin’s voice is a fabulous thing and her song writing is certainly a cut above the average but this reviewer is left feeling that she has a far more exciting album still in her. That’s what’s missing – excitement.
