Bob Collum “The New Old Thing”
-
It may be a long and unlikely way from Tulsa Oklahoma to Basildon Essex, but on his latest EP Bob Collum doesn’t stray too far from his roots on an excellent half dozen country tunes. He opens up with “The Next Time”, a “pull yourself together” tale soundtracked by electric and steel guitars and follows it with “Crawford County”, a running away story with yet more luscious steel from Allan Kelly. The amusing and slightly scary biography “SuperClyde & Me", and three more of equal note.

Although nobody would mistake this EP for anything other than country music, Collum shows himself as quite happy to reach over the boundary fence and grab a bit of whatever takes his fancy, so there are snippets of rock’n’roll and staccato powerpop amongst others. The comparison that comes to mind is a more country Marshall Crenshaw. He has the same slightly leftfield approach, the same ear for a good tune and the same intelligent lyrics.
With the increasing urge of musicians to fill every second of a CD it’s rare these days to find a release that’s too short, but this is one of them. More soon please.
