Tomos Lewis

This is a story of a young Welsh lad who went to the mountains and discovered himself as a musician, obviously being Welsh he carries a voice bred from the valleys too. Yes, Tomos Lewis is out of the very contemporary mould, very much of the moment and not afraid to show resemblance of his self-proclaimed musical influences. It’s artists like this that the Dirty Dozen is here for, so Tomos Lewis….

Tell us about yourselves and what you do?
I'm from the mountains of north Wales, now based in Cardiff. I'm a Singer songwriter and have just released my debut EP 'Four Songs'

How did you get start out?
I got a guitar given to me with three strings on it at 19yr progressed to six strings at 20 and found the sitar too difficult.

What is your current release?
My 'Four Songs' EP is out now as well as the lead single 'I Died Deep Inside' catch title eh?!

What is the best part of being a singer/song writer?
The ability to be expressive and have people connect with my music or better with themselves having listened to it.

What is your most significant moment yet?
My EP Launch night was an emotional high point, to have all my family and friends there and hearing the crowd singing every word back. I was so taken back, there was a lot of love in that room that night.

What are your biggest musical influences?
Ray Lamontagne, Damien Rice, Fion Regan, Bon Iver, James Vincent McMorrow and The Frames amongst countless others.

What venue/gig do you most want to play?
Any, so long as I've got a crowd that like my music I'll play in their living room for all I care.

What is your best/favourite song you have written?
Tough, off the EP it would be Elinor for me. Not down to the words or being musically better, but because it deals with issues that I needed to get out and it hopefully grabs the audience as an emotive piece of writing.

What¹s your favourite album of this year?
Cohen’s latest and possibly last album is a must for me. Of the new bunch I don't know which side of the annum it fell but the Maccabees new record is blinding. Plus from what I've heard of his EP's, Michael Kiwanuka's album is one I'm waiting to hear. As you can see, what I listen to isn't necessarily what I end up sounding like.

What does the next six months have in store for you?
I'm a gun for hire as such, have guitar, will travel kind of ethos. I'll be playing up and down the country, recording the album, meeting new people and living life as fully as possible.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Hopefully looking back having lived a life I can be proud. Who knows where I'll be looking back from, I don't.

What¹s the best thing about Americana-UK?
You go out and find acts first hand and are not scared to be the first to support someone if you believe in them. Long may you continue.
