Tell us about yourselves and what you do?
Texas Tea = Ben + Kate (we are not married). Looks a little bit like band algebra, doesn't it? We've been playing together for about seven years and are about to release our third album. When we play live we often both play guitars and play percussion with our feet. (This sounds much more impressive than it actually is). Sometimes we are looked at more as a musical curiosity than a band, which suits us fine. As Long as we're getting the big bucks though right?... Right?...
How did you get together?
The usual, 'wanna start a band?' story. Insert two piece boy / girl combo mythology. For example: We ARE married, we are brother and sister, Ben is Kate's dad, Kate is Ben's father's, brother's, nephew's or cousin's former room-mate.
What is your current release?
We've just released the first single 'I don't write no sad songs' from our new album that'll be out in September of this year. I believe it is downloadable for free somewhere on the international-information-super-highway.
What is the best part of being in a band/singer/song writer?
People think you are better looking than you actually are when you are in a band.
What is your most significant moment yet?
The best times have been when we have been playing to people who would never normally hear us and so are really out of our element. Like we did a show with Cold War Kids and the crowd were probably all like ‘WTF’! (I don't actually know what that means - just trying to emulate the youngsters y'know). We played in Hamburg with this really great garage punk band called the Hex Dispensers once and the crowd were all like: "Ich weiß nicht, was der Mist dieses ist, aber ich denke, dass ich es genieße" or something.
What are your biggest musical influences?
Elvis Presley, Lighting Hopkins, Dolly Parton, Mrs Mitchell (Music Teacher at the Hall State School circa 1990)
What venue/gig do you most want to play?
Your house. Serious. Anyone can contact us and the next time we're in the UK we will play at your house, (pending rider specs). We'll probably be back there in early 2013 - so we'll come over okay?
What is your favourite song you have written?
We don't like to take sides.
What's your favourite album of this year?
Upon trying to answer this question I realised that I no longer listen to new music. This is concerning. Although, when I looked at my Top 25 most played it included Jonathon Richman, The Kinks and The Rolling Stones, so all is not lost.
What does the next six months have in store for you?
We are releasing a single in March and our 3rd album in Australia this September so there will be a lot of talking about ourselves I reckon. There should be some shows in Australia and then we'll start planning to tour again in Europe.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
In Australia we have lawn bowls clubs and in the corner of these clubs you might sometimes see an old bloke and his wife (or sister) cranking out some tunes on the Casio. Well I don't want to get our hopes up BUT - all I'm saying is that it's possible.
What's the best thing about Americana-UK?
We don't have the internet yet in Australia.
Visits to the UK are a rare occurrence for Texas Tea but when they’re here it’s certainly worth tracking them down. With their stripped back, spooky, country style, the Australian duo have a couple of albums out already and another brand new instalment on the way. We tracked them down for a ‘Dirty Dozen’.
