A sad loss, bringing forth much nostalgia for younger days...the best of the Monkees is still good to hear in the E house - another famous Manchester lad gone to rest.

Sad, and 66 is hardly old.

Got me to spin Headquarters again - pretty good stuff (mostly from Mr Nesmith though). Touches of the Beatles (No Time rips off Dr Robert completely), Mamas and the Papas, Lovin' Spoonful. And over those early albums what a roster of writers they had - Nilssson, Goffin & King, John Stewart,...

....and Stephen Stills nearly got the Peter Tork role.

Yeh, that's a sad one indeed. Didn't see that one coming at all.

They had a handful of really good songs. For me the top 3 would have to be

1) Last train to Clarksville
2) What Am I Doin' Hangin' 'round
3) Pleasant Valley Sunday

Very "Americana" themes I'd say.

I've covered "I'm a Believer" in various bands over the years and it is one of those songs that guarantees the dance floor will see some action.

What are the chances of The Monkees Greatest Hits being in the Album charts next week?

Probably go for the 1st 5 albums in a mini-box for ~£13ish.

All are the expanded versions too.

Interestingly, Neil Young performed on a number of The Monkees tracks, including "You And I" (above on YouTube).

Neil Young played on the following Monkees sessions in 1968:

•Carlise Wheeling Version 4 (5/3) (No audio survived)
•You and I, That's What It's Like Loving You (unrel.), Smile (5/10)
•As We Go Along (5/30)
•You and I (6/19) "Double blistering guitar solo"
•You and I (6/21)

And, Stephen Still was once on the short list for being a member of The Monkees. Imagine that...
