The Nimmo Brothers “Picking Up the Pieces” (Armadillo Music Ltd, 2009).

Sweaty R'n'B.

Just beating our six month deadline for new releases (this came out on July 21st 2009) and veering perilously towards a genre we don’t regularly review (blues), this four piece band from Glasgow are a hard rocking blues-based unit who piledrive in a manner not unlike The Fabulous Thunderbirds, although with less panache and swing.

In fact the first few songs on the album are relatively run of the mill rockers that may sound great live but lack a killer touch that would drive the listener to return again and again. However when the turbo charged 'Bring It on Home' with its fat guitars and wailing harmonica starts all is forgiven. This is a super, souped up slice of R’n’B in the manner of the previously mentioned Thunderbirds with a fatback bounce that drips sweat. 'Gotta Slow Down' continues in this vein while 'In Too Deep' has a ZZ Top groove (back when the Top were down and dirty).

Closing song 'You Don’t Know' ditches the electricity for a skeletal acoustic blues that highlights the Nimmo’s debt to one of their heroes, Peter Green.
