Heller Mason “Minimalist & Anchored” EP (Independent 2005) To review this without mentioning the Red House Painters would be like describing an omelette without mentioning eggs. There is the same thick acoustic sound (as Kozelek – not eggs), the slow heavy vocals, the stately pace and the denseness. So the question is, does he add anything to the recipe, some paprika picante perhaps? Well no, there’s precious little difference - strings saw away in the background like a ring of fumes around a smokers head, self-reflexive questions are asked, and the answers aren’t happy ones. The eggs aren’t even broken, they are preserved whole - it would have been much better if the ingredients had been scrambled; perhaps then we would have had something rather more tasty.
