Kelly Steward “Long Long Road” EP (Independent, 2009)

There’s something missing…

Steward’s first EP was released in 2000, so this second has been a while coming. This may have something to do with the fact that not only is she taking some faltering steps into the professional music business, she also has a full time job and is rearing her son alone, so it’s understandable why this has taken a while to emerge.

This four track EP demonstrates Steward’s vocal abilities, as the girl can definitely sing, but aside from ‘Wish You Away’ there is little to make her stand out of a very over populated crowd of female singer-songwriters.

‘Get Back On Your Way’, ‘When Summer Ends’ and ‘Lost My Mind’ seem to merely go through the motions and there is very little about them that truly stands out, or stays with the listener after they’ve finished. Of these three, the second track is the stronger, but unfortunately that is missing that certain something. Pleasant they maybe, but they lack any distictiveness.

Ably produced by Miles Nielsen, who also wrote ‘Lost My Mind’, this EP lacks one simple ingredient; catchy songs with memorable lyrics.
