Ezio "Live in Cambridge" (The A Label 2005)

Ezio's songs lean mainly towards the poppier side of "white soul", and are delivered convincingly in a voice heavily influenced by Van Morrison, and at times Elvis Costello. He is ably backed up by a tight band , featuring some impressive guitar from Booga, revealing strong flamenco and "world music" overtones. This live recording features 5 previously unreleased tracks, ensuring that committed fans will want a copy. The audience here seem pretty much word perfect on some of the more familiar songs, as they sing along lustily when exhorted to do so. Is it Americana? Does it matter? A few bursts of excellent lap steel from Lee Russell probably just tip the balance, and anyway, it is a good collection of mainly decent songs well sung and played, and that's what matters in the long run.
