Tomorrow Is Already Here "First Words" (Independent 2008)

Simple songs, simply done

Hailing from Illinois Tomorrow Is Already Here is essentially the first solo work of singer-songwriter Garrett Gengler. Gathering together a few friends and associates he has written most of these low key little gems in between what is the normal day to day workings of his life. A keen ear for melody, Gengler populates most of his songs himself, a personal sketchbook of emotional ups and downs. The instrumentation is kept to a minimum throughout – a little bit of organ here a shimmering cymbal there – this is simple music for simple enjoyment. Nothing complicated or over done just a selection of fine songs that definitely reward repeated listens. It’s a little US college indie for sure, and no doubt there will be a few Converse wearing kids already claiming they found him first, but essentially it’s a record that could easily fit into the mainstream. Harmony and melody are cherished here, there is little room for abstraction or confrontation. Solid from start to finish treat these as individual little three minute nuggets and you may well fall under Garrett’s charm too just as I have.
