The Story Of "The World’s Affair" (Leroy Godspeed Records 2007)

Good stories

Armed with guitars and a good bundle of energy, ‘The Story Of’ produce a record that rocks from the first song till the last, yet instead of hiding bad songs in loud guitars, they manage to capsulate quality songs with a rock n roll base. Reminiscent at times of Lucero, and also of a less ambient Hope of the States, ‘The World’s Affair’ is a joy to listen to throughout.

The first song, ‘EMT’, gets straight into the groove. Shouts of “One, Two, Three, Four” lead into a heavy drumbeat, and then vocals and guitars crash in. The real quality of the album shows when, just into the first song, the lads quiet down the song before driving into the verse again. ‘Pinwheel’ shows the band softer side, yet to no less avail as great lyrics and good use of horns make the song just as good as the rockers. The last song on the album ‘Recall The Winners’ stands at an epic 10.48. Visions of British Sea Power are played as the song allows the last 4 minutes to be left to a simple guitar riff and a speech sample.

There are a few songs that fall a bit flat on the album, not quite going in any direction and so peter out. Apart from those few, the album is of high quality throughout. Here’s hoping to a UK tour.
