Charlie Don't Shake “The South Will Take Your Blues Away” (Rexrode Records 2004)

Charlie Don't Shake were formed in 2000 by Craig Schmidt on vocals etc. and Jeremy Whitman on guitars etc., this is their first record, recorded in Lansing Michigan, for which they rounded up some other musicians for drumming, piano and other duties. The songs are vaguely folky and blues based, the vocals are not great and fairly deep in the mix, possibly for that reason. For comparisons it all sounds something like Beck playing a mixture of Morphine and White Stripes, but not really in a manner that works, 'Julie Money' is probably the best song, the dead pan vocal working for once and a fine hooky handclap driven chorus. That's not enough to save the record from mediocrity however.
