Pacific Ocean Fire “Whiskey Fiction” (Sad Star Sounds 2005) Leicester-based Pacific Ocean Fire’s latest is a six track EP which sees them broadening their template somewhat, notably on opener “No Heroics, Please”, which is almost jaunty, while the title track is hooky and handsome enough to get them some mainstream airplay, and the hints of a louder Lambchop on earlier recordings are more prominent here. The overall POF sound is still in place though, Jon Bennett’s impassioned vocals and literary lyrics overlaid on note-perfect instrumentation, with great brass from David Fellows, to create an aching, poignant and desperately beautiful sound, that while nodding to Calexico, The Flaming Lips and the afore-mentioned Lambchop, is totally their own.
