The Doxies "In Search Of..." (Co-opt 2006)

Vintage power pop, with the emphasis on the pop, erm and the power.

Four years on, four albums in and in the press release to promote ‘In Search Of…’ tells us that Columbia, Missouri’s The Doxies are already planning a return to the studio before 2006 draws to a close. Pheww – the Ryan Adams of the power pop circuit?

Well, never having heard what has come before it, nor indeed what material they feel they can’t sit on for another eight weeks, I am mightily impressed with ‘In Search Of…’; I can’t believe we are talking about the late eighties and early nineties college radio sound as being a ‘vintage’, but sadly it’s true and The Doxies capture it perfectly; no hint of nostalgia, making it their own.

Opener ‘Once In A While’ could be classic Cotton Mather and ‘Damn Shame’ would sit on any Jayhawks record from the same era. ‘In Search of…’ combines big guitars, big hooks and bigger harmonies, retaining its edge, but sufficiently polished so as not to sound amateur. The added female vocal presence of new drummer Phylshawn Johnson both anchors the record and stamps individuality across it.

If the new material is so good that The Doxies are willing to put ‘In Search of…’ behind them so quickly, then it is something we should all be looking out for. PG
