San Saba County “It’s Not The fall That Hurts” (India 2006)
Countrypolitan from the plains of Texas
Named after San Saba County in Texas, this band definitely lets the soil touch the sky. With touches of Townes Van Zant (‘Medicine), Dylan ('Nothin’ Like the Dallas Homesick Blues’), The Kinks (‘Estacion Del Norte’), and Wilco (‘Springtime’) this band has a variety of influences. There’s even some Beach Boys surf in the opener ‘More than Me’, although they’re nearer the Rio Grande than California. Countrypolitan indeed, particularly on the Gram Parsons’ influenced steel on ‘Oh and One More Thing’ and ‘Hell To Pay’ played by Bill McCullough.
Numerous songs about breaking up, with more rock guitar than banjo playing this CD outlines a definite improvement on their debut ‘Easy Does It’ released in 2004. San Saba County seems a nice place to visit, and these boys and gal do their hometown justice.
