Nick Saunders “Resonance” (Digital Wings 2006)

A treasure to hold on to

Nick Saunders’ album is riveting, creating such atmosphere that it seems a travesty to describe individual songs, when the mood is so right, and the listening experience transcends time and place. The pastoral English sound of album opener makes clear why Saunders is compared to another Nick (Drake), but the comparisons should stop there. Nick Saunders album is entirely his own voice; a fabulously elegant and touchingly simple, delicate performance. A clever songwriter who speaks subtly of grand and small emotions, with feeling but without excessive sentimentality. He’s also an extraordinary guitar player – no laying down multiple tracks for him - vocals and guitar were done together, lending immediacy as well as inspiring respectful cap-doffing. It is a privilege to review this album! Buy it now.
