Jackie Barnett “Natural” (Independent 2006)
“So-so singer-songwriter debut EP”
For a recording from someone who used to sing with the Kings College Choir and has apparently been fronting bands for years, “Natural” can only be described as a disappointment. Barnett’s vocals are curiously insubstantial and she struggles to reach and sustain some notes. In fact the whole recording is a bit insubstantial, and drifts past the listener without ever engaging them. The production isn’t good either, with too much of the instrumentation either muffled or too loud. Of the five tracks, “Old Dress, New Shoes” and “Soul in Rock and Roll” are the best and bounce along jauntily enough, but are lyrically poor - “girls don’t sing about feeling blue”, “girls put the soul in rock and roll” – excuse me? Best avoided.
