Jeffrey Foucault "Ghost Repeater" (Rounder 2006)

Music Speaks Louder Than Words

There are times when words can seem quite inadequate, and even superfluous, with attempts to describe the music easily degenerating into pretentious waffle. Suffice to say, therefore, that Jeffrey Foucault is a supremely talented performer and songwriter, and that this is a collection of beautifully crafted songs with wonderfully ambiguous but convincingly poetic lyrics. The exquisitely tasteful production by Bo Ramsay, and the unfussy but "on the ball" playing from, among others, Ramsay himself on guitar, and Eric Heywood on lap steel (his achingly beautiful contribution to "One Part Love" is just one of many stunning moments) complement to perfection Foucault's vocal delivery, which contains a myriad of reference points - Steve Earle, Darrell Scott, Lowell George, Nick Drake etc. Very highly recommended, and already a strong candidate for the CDs of the year list.
