The Donuts “Buckley” (Chapter 7, 2004) The latest offering from the burgeoning powerpop revival across the pond are Philadelphia’s Donuts. Fourteen songs, 31 minutes, great choruses and that driving beat all make “Buckley” a fine addition to the genre. The lyrics are a cut above the average too. There’s the occasional bit of trying too hard with things like band pseudonyms (Johnny Taint on guitar anyone, the odd forced couplet like You better start coping/she’s gone eloping”“) but these are minor quibbles. Overall, nothing particularly original or earth-shattering, but a whole lot of fun. Best played loud, perhaps while indulging in the odd bout of nostalgic pogo-ing. www.thedonuts.com
